Do you have to go to the beach to find shells? I will show you where I found a bucket of shells!
Do you have to go to the beach to find shells? The answer is NO! I have been wanting to visit this marsh and since the tides were not in my favor all week, I decided to finally visit Harms Marsh.
I can't believe how much fun I had digging next to a parking lot!

Low tide evening shelling in Florida. Baby shells, monster shells and critters!

    Some of the birds you thought were turkey vultures were not. They flew too fast. Vultures soar and are awkward near the ground. They have great eye sight but even better sense of smell. Yup, they can smell dead animals from a great distance. I loved the land snails and the muscles. It would be interesting to try making buttons with them.

    Always love your videos. We like to take shelling vacations to the gulf coast. Used to stay on Sanibel. Last year we went to Marco. This year we are looking for a house big enough for 8. I found a vrbo on the very south end of Estero Island right across from Lovers Key. Is that a good place to shell? In this video you said you liked to shell in that part of Fort Myers Beach. Exactly what part do you think is the best?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife 2 дні тому

      If where you are staying is by the bridge from Estero Island to Lovers Key it's a fabulous place to shell! Now getting on over to the beach is another story. There is no proper access down there. Last time I went I was going to walk under the bridge, but it's. under construction so I changed my mind. I had to walk up the street and trespass on someone's property that has no home on the lot right now. Before you rent, ask where the beach access is. It's a GREAT location for shelling but you need proper/safe beach access.

    • @brendalunsford2530
      @brendalunsford2530 День тому

      It is right on the beach…sort of. But it is about 400 yards from the house to the water. At least according to the photos there is a very big sandy area right on the end of the island the rental is only a few houses from the bridge. It is a white hexagon/octagon house with a blue roof. Maybe you have seen it.

      Thank you for your input. I have passed the information onto the rest of my family. The downside is there’s no pool or hot tub at that location there which the family would like. And it’s more expensive than some of the places we were looking at in Cape Coral. How is the parking on the south end of Estero island? Even if we don’t pick that house and we stay in Cape Coral I was wondering how easy it would be to park so we could go shelling on the end of the island?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife День тому

      @@brendalunsford2530 There is ZERO legal public parking on the south end of the island. You will have a few challenges getting there, but you could take the trolley or Uber there and back. Be advised that in many states, including apparently FL, the collection, harvesting, and possession of freshwater mussels (unionids; what you're calling clams) is regulated by conservation authorities. Yes, even just the shells. It's kind of like owning feathers. Also, many unionids are declining, threatened, endangered, and possessing their shells could get you in trouble. Check out your state regulations re freshwater mussels. Finally, the "meh" clam with ridges is the invasive Asian clam.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife 4 дні тому

      Thanks for the info! I know you need to check when you're collecting live specimens, but I couldn't find anything about collecting freshwater shells here in Lee County. All the endangered mussels I found were up in the panhandle, not down here. And many people have ID'd that invasive clam. Grrrr.

      @@SWFBeachLife I live in Missouri, and the Ozarks, with its many separate stream systems, is a major center of unionid diversity. We have ca. 70 spp. in the state. Ca. 42% of them (29 spp.) are state species of conservation concern (endangered, threatened, or otherwise declining; some are federally endangered). Meanwhile, other species are abundant and legal for harvesting (live) for use as bait or as food, so they're covered under the state's fishing regulations, requiring a fishing license and with a daily bag limit, measured by numbers of shells (with shell halves counting as "one" mussel). Many different unionid species can occur in the same stream system, so it's critical for people to be able to distinguish between the declining spp. and the ones you can harvest. It's really challenging to ID the various species, IMO. Here's more info on Missouri's unionids. mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/freshwater-mussels

    Hi, I’m wondering why you don’t use the acid you use on the sea shells?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife 4 дні тому

      I would use acid on seashells, but freshwater shells like the ones I'm finding in this video are more delicate and bleach might damage them.

    The growth of the beak size is not intentional as a reaction to the changed environment with the tougher shells. It is also near impossible that they adapted within a year. Those kind of adaptations need a lot of generarions. and these birds probably do not build nests all the time. The point is that adaptations are random mutatations and one mutation fits just better than the other. Mutations in beak size favor the larger beak in this case. The survival chances are just a little bit better and over time the larger beaks will dominate and evolve even further until a larger beak does not give additional survival chances. It takes lots of generations before these beaks have doubled in size.Not within a year, that is NOT true. Survival of the fittest should be called: survival of the most fitting. And this process takes many generations, has no intentiionality because it it about random mutations, and has nothing to do with individual effort. Or with the faulty idea that 'the strongest survives' .That is not what 'fittest' is about.

      I found a lot of different information about this particular subject. This video says the birds increased 12% in size in just a decade: ua-cam.com/video/cCBut3BAsCU/v-deo.html Researches from the University of Florida said they noticed the snail kites were bigger, and their beaks were bigger in just 8 years - one year from the time the apple snail appeared here.

    • @Merlijnvv
      @Merlijnvv 4 дні тому

      @@SWFBeachLife 12% in a decade...that is different. Still fast, but obviously possible.. A counter development might be that the snails would become thicker as well, as the thinner genotypes were eten more. And so the mutations with thicker shells would be higher in number and had more offspring. Just a hypothesis. A similar race occurred in the dinosaur era, when both herbivores and carnivores grew bigger and bigger.

    Don't use bleach for freshwater shells! at 20:12 those are Corbicula shells. Before I became very ill I had the plan to glue the smaller specimens togeter, drill a hole in each one of them, and you guessed it: make beads and then a necklace. Maybe even gradually increasing in size with the biggest one in the middle on your chest. Oil'em up, and who knows what it could have been. All those plans are history now.. Each trip I found dozens of those corbiculas. Tip: use wooden tooth picks instead of metal. and lukewarm water only. Dry and oil. sometimes, thinner mussels have a tendency to crack when they dry. So when still a bit wet, already apply mineral oil if you can.

    11:05 Viviparus snail. Here in the Netherland we have now 3 species. One new invasive species just looks like Viviparus viviparus, but gets a lot bigger. I gave it all away. Edit: dirty business? well it is all clean. Dirty is when you have a drought and the pond is half dry, but with botulism and blue algae. On top of that you have an entire population of a few hundred big swan mussels rottin in the sun-heated mud. Some were already clean, some were at an advanced rotting stage, and had become like scrambled egg... I collected about 150 of those, and some were so bad that the flies were already on the goo as it still fell to the ground. Thát was a dirty business! With my boots though the rotten mud, with dead and diseased birds around me.

      Does your horrific smell, smell slightly burnt? That awful, putrid smell of rotting sea things is the worst smell I've ever encountered. Your trip beats mine in the gross department hands down, but I would have been there right next to you! I can't resist that nacre!

      @@SWFBeachLife Scrambled egg, wrong word. sorry for that. Rotting freshwater shells is maybe even worse than the ones from the sea. And the amount of flesh inside a 6 inch mussel is substantial. It is so vile...the stench remains in your nose for hours. And then the botulism and algae added to the idea that everything you touched was diseased.

    at 9:10 in the shop are shells that are found alive and killed, but also the same as you just found there yourself: fresh dead specimens with the operculum still present. Dealers in India will find operculums of a species, and when you buy from them you get a generic operculum from the big stash. It's not a one-way street, it's more like an intersection. By the way, you can polish the thicker mussels, drill a hole in it and use a tiny carabiner clip through the hole... and you have an amulet. Oil it several times with mineral oil and it will shine like silver. There are some really nice small electrical hand tools out there, with multiple poish heads you can use. Carabiner clips come in dark bronze colour, chrome, pink chrome, and yellow copper i believe. about 18 mm total length including the eye. I have made some amulets myself, and drilling/polishing at the right spot needs some practice. The thicker the shell the easier the polishiing. Personally I have only used the narutal shell shape, but you can make it any shape you like as far as the shell permits.

      Oh shaping the shell would be neat! I am so mesmerized by all that nacre! I did try putting a mussel in acid and I don't like the results. I figure I'll mess around with the ones I have until I eventually find something I'd like to make with them. Love the amulet idea!
